This project involved the adaptive renovation of an existing community building to accommodate a licensed childcare centre serving multiple age groups. The building remained in community use, requiring integration of new childcare functions into an established layout while maintaining shared‑use circulation, accessibility, and life‑safety requirements.
The renovation focused on creating program‑appropriate classrooms, improving visibility and daylight access, and adapting existing building components to meet Ministry of Education licensing standards and Ontario Building Code (OBC) Part 3 requirements.

Architectural services included feasibility verification, permit drawings, and coordination to support both licensing and code compliance:

Renovations occurred within an occupied community building that continued to support other programs and users. Sequencing required coordination with building operations, inspectors, and multiple stakeholders. Prescriptive licensing standards for classroom size, window‑to‑floor area ratios, and supervision shaped design decisions. Upgrades needed to be integrated sensitively with existing architecture without compromising compliance or shared‑use functionality.

The renovated centre delivered a fully licensed childcare environment (104 children) within the footprint of a community building, featuring bright, visible classrooms and safe circulation. Outdoor play areas and interior improvements were completed to meet Ministry and OBC requirements while respecting shared‑use constraints. The project provided a compliant, welcoming facility that supports consistent operations within a multi‑use building.
